Although January 1st will bring in a new year, you don’t have to look another year older.   One of  the major physical traits that make women look older than they are is thinning hair.  HPI can help you with that issue easily.

But what’s the point of looking younger if you’re not feeling the part?

Check out the following article link for suggested exercise routines intended to keep your years from showing and improving your overall health.   “9 Exercises to Reduce the Effects of Aging”

Surgical Hair Restoration Not Always Solution for Women with Hairloss

Carla is an HPI client with female pattern thinning on right and with her human hair prosthesis on the left.

While HPI is an expert in non-surgical hair restoration for women and children, we get calls regularly inquiring about surgical hair replacement.

Women asking about hair transplants might be interested to know that surgical hair replacement is only an option for about 2%-5% of the women with hair loss.

The majority of women with hair loss experience an overall thinning usually because dihydrotestosterone (DHT) has caused the follicles to shrink overall , therefore they don’t have the capability to provide donor hair from a stable area that hasn’t been affected by the DHT.

Many women with female pattern thinning, alopecia or other forms of hair loss have opted to restore their hair with a custom human hair addition.  A custom human hair prosthesis can provide as much or as little coverage as necessary, can be washed and styled just like natural growth hair and look so natural, no one would know it’s a hair addition.

If you are a woman with hairloss that’s interested in a surgical solution, it’s best to first have the cause of your hair loss diagnosed by a dermatologist, then you will know which route is best for your hair restoration.

For more in depth information regarding surgical vs. non-surgical options for women with hair loss, click to the WebMD article “Women’s Hair Loss and Hair Restoration.”

HPI Sponsors “Bald Girls Do Lunch”

HPI is proud to sponsor three events in Tennessee in partnership with the non-profit organization “Bald Girls Do Lunch” the first week of December.

“Bald Girls Do Lunch” provides a casual, informative and entertaining opportunity for women with alopecia to meet, get the latest medical updates and share coping experiences.

Every year thousands are diagnosed with some form of alopecia, which is an autoimmune condition that attacks the hair follicles, causing unexpected hair loss.  Hair loss to any woman is crushing to her self-esteem and self-confidence as she may become isolated and withdrawn during this experience.  Knowledge  and support can make such a difference to anyone who’s blindsided by alopecia’s completely unpredictable pattern of hair loss.

The  ”Bald Girls Do Lunch” events will be held in Memphis on Wednesday, November 30th;  Nashville  on Thursday, December 1st and Knoxville on Friday, December 2nd.

Make your reservations asap.  You’ll be glad you were a part of this unique gathering.

Simple Detox Tips for Diet & Home

During our consultations at HPI, we talk to many women with hair loss resulting from hormonal or thyroid issues and I can’t help but wonder exactly how much of those type of problems are caused by environmental elements.

Among the articles I’ve read recently, I thought this one had some interesting tips for relatively easy ways we can detox ourselves from chemicals found around us every day.  For instance, I’ve chosen to store most of my leftover foods in glass containers instead of plastic and buy organic fruits and vegetables when I can.  And I’m using my iron skillet more these days.

Click here for the link to the full article.  What do you do to keep unwanted chemicals from your daily lives?

Red Wine May Help Slow Breast Cancer Cell Growth

At HPI, we’re always interested in advances in cancer prevention,  new treatment options, etc.  I remember not long ago a study that was published that cautioned women from having two or more alcoholic drinks per day as that could lead to breast cancer.

Now it seems, that warning may need to be slightly modified.  Another study recently released claims that the benefits of red wine may include slowing the growth of breast cancer cells!

What You May NOT Know About Breast Cancer

Hair Prosthesis Institute serves many women battling breast cancer and although each individual’s struggle is different, during our private consultation session we may share some of the common threads of hair loss from our experience of being in this business over 17 years.

There is so much information floating around about breast cancer, especially in October during Breast Cancer Awareness month, but isn’t there always some new little tidbit to learn,  no matter how much you thought you already knew?

For instance, one study suggests that lonely women are at higher risk of having breast cancer than women that gather often with friends.

And the genetic link to breast cancer can as easily come from your father’s side of the family as your mother’s side.

Breast Cancer Symptoms – More Than a Lump

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Hair Prosthesis Institute serves many women diagnosed with breast cancer.  We’re happy that what we do can restore some sense of confidence during such a challenging time.   When my sister lost her hair during her cancer treatments years ago, I wasn’t able to find her anything that was comfortable or looked natural to replace her beautiful hair.  That experience propelled me into this business and I’m glad to say others have benefitted from it.

Most of our clients are amazed that no one, not even their doctors or nurses, notices that their hair prosthesis is not their natural hair growth  This enables them to maintain control over their outward appearance instead of letting it be dictated by the disease.  And when something like breast cancer creates chaos in your life, control over any aspect of it is a welcomed sense of power.

I’m sure you’re familiar with the importance of maintaining monthly breast self-exams, but are you aware there are more symptoms of breast cancer than finding a lump?  I found an interesting online article that explains other symptoms of breast cancer that could be cause for concern and should be checked with your physician.  To read more, click here.
